Agricutural Biotechnology

The Agricultural Biotechnology Academy prepares students for a place in America’s largest industry. Over 20 percent of America’s work force is employed in some phase of the agricultural industry. A knowledge of agriculture can be applied to virtually anyag career. The Academy currently offers classes in the areas of plant science, animal science, horticulture and biotechnology. Course material emphasizes research techniques, business skills, and agricultural applications. The program will produce well-educated students who will be prepared for employment in one of the more than 300 exciting and diverse careers in agriculture. The curriculum is also designed for university-bound students who are interested in math, science and health fields. Students will graduate from the Agricultural Biotechnology Academy with a high school diploma and an industry recognized certificate of competencies.

The Agricultural Biotechnology complex consists of a greenhouse, shade house, garden, computer lab, science laboratory, sterile hood rabbitroom and a plant tissue culture grow-out room. In addition to plants, the greenhouse contains a 1000 gallon aquaculture system and a hydroponics lab. Students are also responsible for daily care of the hamsters, turtles, rabbits, and parakeets that are part of the small animal science area.

The Agricultural Biotechnology Advisory Board oversees the program and seeks ways to give students practical, real-world experiences in horticulture, animal science and biotechnology. Board members keep students abreast of industry needs, trends, and requirements. Students will have the opportunity to intern with several of the businesses that compose the advisory board.
