According to Orange County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct, "Each school establishes its own dress code consistent with the following School Board policy: Appropriate garments shall be worn to school. A student shall not dress, groom, or wear any emblems, insignias, badges or other symbols where the effect is likely to unreasonably distract the attention of other students or cause disruption or interference with the operation of the school. All school personnel shall encourage acceptable dress and shall provide guidance in these matters without embarrassment to the student."

Studies show that school uniforms foster a sense of safety, cooperation, and unity. At Hungerford Prep, our goal is to prepare students for their future while fostering a safe and professional environment. Therefore, Hungerford Prep has designed the following dress/uniform policy. This policy is subject to change in order to reflect changes in OCPS policy or to maintain the professional atmosphere of the school.

Students must be in uniform during all classes, field trips, and school activities unless other attire has been specifically approved by the administration. Students must be in uniform before they arrive on campus until after they leave campus.

Students must wear a neat, clean, well fitting uniform to include:
One of the approved Hungerford Prep shirts with the compass rose logo. All shirts must be kept tucked in.
Pleated khaki or black slacks, walking shorts, or skirts.
These must be worn at the waist with a belt passed through belt loops.
Shorts and skirts must extend below the reach of one’s fully extended fingertips.
Shoes that are completely closed and meet professional and environmental requirements.
The Hungerford Prep identification card.
This must be displayed above the waist with the photo, name, and bar code clearly visible.
Damaged or defaced ID cards will be confiscated and must be replaced at the student’s expense. The same policy applies for lost ID cards.

Students may wear:
A Hungerford Prep jacket or sweater over their shirt.
No other coats, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, etc. may cover the Hungerford Prep uniform except as noted below.
A black, gray, tan, or white coat for warmth may be warn while outside, but these must be removed once inside any room.
Earrings (or piercing studs) in the ears only, and necklaces under the shirt only.
Shoes must be closed-toed and have backs or straps AT ALL TIMES, including dress down days.

Students may NOT wear:
Any items other than those described above or forbidden by Orange County Public Schools policy, including bandanas, hats, or scarves.

Consequences for Uniform Violations: Students in violation of Hungerford Prep Uniform policy will not be permitted in class AND

1st offense = Loss of dress down privileges
2nd offense = Parent contact and Academy detention
3rd offense = Referral for Administrative detention
4th offense = Referral for Saturday School
5th offense = Referral for suspension alternative
6th + offense = Referral for 1 to 10 days suspension

Dress Down Days:
Students have the opportunity to earn "Dress Down Day" privileges, based on compliance with the dress code. Students who dress down while their privileges are revoked will be sent immediately to In School suspension. As stated above, Hungerford students are not to wear backless or open-toed shoes even during dress down days.
